Sometimes we need a healthy dose of perspective. Earlier this week as I faced a challenging situation, I decided to be positive and take assessment of the good fortune in my life.
Over the spring and summer, I volunteered once a week at Second Harvest Food Bank in San Carlos. I even blogged about it while working at SummerHill Homes. When I got a new job this summer, I wasn’t able to make the volunteer drop in hours and I gave up on volunteering for awhile.
This week as I faced the challenge, I thought volunteering would help me keep things in perspective. Today I volunteered and I am so grateful for the opportunity. We labeled cans of peaches and mixed fruit with photocopies of real labels.
One of the woman, who had clearly faced far greater challenges than me by the stories she shared with me, said to me, “you’re taking it like a champ.”.
That made me feel darn proud. As we face challenges big and small, there is nothing more powerful than giving back, another simple joy.
