I have been very absent in writing here as we have been without Internet at home for over 2 weeks. This post was worth posting from my phone.
Last night I went back to volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank for the first time in probably 6 months. Between the job that I started earlier this year and trying to find time to workout, I was having trouble making time for volunteering.
Of course, leave it to me to sign up for yoga teacher training, which leaves me with decidedly less time in my daily life, only to find time to get back to volunteering. I guess what the teachers in the yoga program have said about showing how you live rather than just telling about it that made me want to get back to giving back.
Last night we helped label many, many boxes of Raisin Bran with a notice that they contained corn as an allergy alert. There is nothing more humbling than being in the warehouse on Bing Street and hearing once again that 1 in 10 people need assistance with food. In our country, I really feel that nobody should ever be faced with hunger.
We live an abundant life in the US. Some could argue that we have excess. When I toss food that has spoiled from not eating it fast enough, I try to remember not to buy so much food.
I am so grateful to get back to volunteering. It feels so good.
