We started the day walking with our friends from the 1e thru the 5e (St. Germain) to the Marche Maubert. We stopped along the way for some macaroons. We discovered this market on the very last day of our trip 4 years ago, so it seemed fitting that we ended up there today. We enjoyed a café at the Café Brasserie before heading into the market to buy some fromage from Laurent DuBois and a bottle of vin rose.
We continued our walk to the Marche Mouffetard, which is quite a bit larger than the Maubert with more permanent shops. I found a wooden mortar and pestle plus we got some bread at a boulangerie. We also picked up some apricot pistachio tarts although those ultimately did not get eaten as the box had been bumped around by the time we got to eating them.
We rented bikes again and loved every minute of it. It is such a great way to see Paris. Neither of us are big public transportation fans, so the bikes were a fun option rather than taxis to see more of the city. We walked a lot last time we were here, too much in fact as we were exhausted by it.
From the Mouffetard market, we biked to Jardins du Luxembourg to enjoy simple lunch of bread, cheese, vin rose and macaroons.
After lunch, we biked to the Montmartre area. I had my heart set a little shopping time at les Galléries Lafayette. Alas, I was only able to make one purchase before my credit card was declined, say what? Yup, credit card declined. Unlike the US, the store does not call the credit card company for you.
After a 20+ minute conversation from my cell phone to the credit card company, we discovered that it had been tagged for fraud. We had done all of the appropriate call ahead to let them know we would be traveling, but someone decided to use it at a Walmart in Vegas. I am more of a Target girl, so that was a clear indication that something was amiss.
Ultimately, they reactivated it for limited use, i.e. card must be present to use and only usable in France until our new cards arrives later this week. The good news is that I needed a new card anyhow due to the defective smart chip in my card, the bad news I didn’t get the adorable shoes I wanted, oh yah and fraud would be bad news too.
We biked back to our hotel for a rest before dinner and also to pack up for Antibes.
Our friends met us at our hotel for dinner and they kindly asked out concierge for a recommendation. We headed around the corner for a delicious meal at La Castiglione.
The waiter was super nice and gave us lots of recommendations. He had even lived in Palo Alto, so his English was also good.
We tried to head to the carnival at the Jardins du Tuileries, but it was closing as we arrived. Next time!
Tomorrow onto Antibes/Juan Les Pins!
