Several weeks ago, I received an invite from our Club for a morning that included breakfast, a tour of the vegetable garden at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge, and planting a pot of herbs to take home. I signed up right away.
After feeling grumpy on Monday evening, a bit of sunshine, getting my hands dirty, and some yummy breakfast were just the thing to make me smile!
I learned some lessons for when we eventually plant our own vegetable garden too.
– To help your herbs grow more fully, pinch off the terminal bud at the top.
– Did you know that Bay leaves grow on trees?
– Especially in Arizona, coverage is better with water. For pots, use the spaghetti irrigation to cover the whole pot.
– Small terracotta pots are best indoors in Arizona as they get too warm for the plant without enough soil insulation.
If you stay at the Desert Ridge, they offer a tour of the gardens during the weekend. Even though the tour does not include a potted plant, it is worth a look at the great garden that they have growing!
