For months as I attended ASREB in Scottsdale, periodically I would take Scottsdale Road north to Camelback Road and drive by this interesting looking place called Second Story. It stands out a bit as it is one of the two-level buildings on the road and clearly one of the only restaurants located on the second level of a building.
I looked it up online and discovered a unique restaurant concept. They change their menu EVERY 6 weeks! Can you imagine?
When I thought of where to celebrate finally passing my AZ broker’s exam, this seemed like the perfect place. I love handcrafted cocktails, which is one of their specialties. After a not so great experience at another place in Phoenix for cocktails, I was ready for a place that makes them well.
We headed to Second Story on a Sunday evening a few weeks ago after I introduced D to the amazement of Scottsdale Fashion Square where he purchased my anniversary gifts. Side note, piece of advice when you want your husband to not know how many times you have visited a particular shopping destination, it is probably better not to give directions into the underground parking with such authority.
They have parking in back. We showed up right as they opened, hey we were ready for our cocktail after shopping!
The team had just gotten back from a little vacance before we visited to get ideas for upcoming menus. Our waitress was really kind and shared all about the restaurant concept, sharing even more about how they craft the menu to tell a story. Their current menu is built around the Prohibition era.
While I was trying to listen to her, I was really captivated by the huge slab of meat peeking thru on the counter in the kitchen. I really wanted to take a photo as it was so beautiful. So beautiful that I couldn’t even stop staring long enough to take a photo, whoops!
When I discovered the chef was cutting it in preparation for steak tartare of all things, I was hooked! I was pretty much vegetarian last summer until we went to France where I craved steak tartare with reckless abandon.
Second Story’s steak tartare is delicious! D ordered the Foie of the Day and was equally impressed.
We also had the uni carbonara. For those of you that know D personally, uni is hands down his favorite sushi, so we just had to have this. I am less of a fan of uni for the texture, but having it in this carbonara dish was a different “story.” The umami flavors were really highlighted in this dish.
They treated us candied cashews after our meal that were other worldly.
We will most certainly be going back!
