We have been in search of good Mexican food since we moved to Phoenix. In the Bay Area, we had our “go to” places for different types of Mexican food whether it was quick and easy (Lulu’s), close to home (Hola’s), addictively tasty and conveniently close to the movie theater (Milagros), delicious destination (Mijita), and well clearly I could go on as we have always enjoyed Mexican food.
A few months ago we ate at the gourmet destination, Barrio Cafe, and it was definitely a great place for a fancier Mexican meal, but we what we really wanted is that place we can go on a weeknight to grab a quick, delicious and reasonably priced meal close to home. Just one or two conditions, right?
This week I was chatting with my mentor and she shared that Urban Taco has the best burritos she has tasted in California or Arizona. Since she’s a fellow Bay Area transplant, I decided Urban Taco was the perfect place to celebrate completing my first open house and grabbing a much needed bite to eat (note to self: bring a snack when you host an open house from 12 to 3).
I arrived at Urban Taco right at 4pm, which was perfect timing as their Happy Hour runs from 4 to 7 Monday thru Saturday – SCORE!
The owner, Tim, whipped up a quick margarita for me while I decided what to eat.
I settled on the Octopus Asado street taco with the Rajas con Crema de Maiz. He suggested the Avocado and Garlic Crema as the salsa for the taco.
This is single handedly the best Mexican food that I have tasted outside of Mexico, which is saying something when your Grandmother is friends with Diana Kennedy.
The salsa was so good that I asked for a small portion of chips to not let it go to waste.
I chatted with Tim’s son as I thought surely Tim had lived in Mexico at some point to achieve these great flavors, but it turns out he just learned along the way in his restaurant career.
D was not able to join me for this dinner, but we will clearly be going back and I did bring home some of their homemade flan for him to enjoy for dessert.
Urban Taco is a great local, family run restaurant. It’s unassuming location may lead you to drive right by, but stop, trust me just stop.
