After my last half marathon, I decided that if I want to break 2 hrs I will need to run with a pace setter. Starting with the 2 hr pace group at my last race made me realize that if I am going to break 2 hrs, then it will be running with a pace person.
I started this post in December of 2013, but never posted it. Initially, I wanted to break this time in early 2014, however we got to well, moving and early 2014 was a clusterf$%k.
From the draft that I started, “I am starting to train to break my PR on February 2nd. I will be running a race, I am just not sure which one just yet.” This is a very telling quote. At that point in 2013 I knew there was a significant possibility that we would relocate to Arizona, however we had not told anyone yet.
I wrote it after running the Big Sur Half Marathon, which is hands down the most beautiful half marathon I have run to date as well as my happiest half marathon to date. AND, it was also my slowest half marathon to date. Training SUCKED that year, I just could not get on the program – it hurt, I wasn’t motivated, etc.
Between job changes in our home and deciding whether or not to leave our Bay Area home of nearly 14 years, things were a little chaotic in the Fall of 2013.
It was a half marathon that was supposed to be run with friends, but one after another they fell off the bandwagon mostly with injuries.
Heck, I was not even going to run it, but at the last minute I was inspired to run it and I am most certainly glad that I did. “Suite” upgrade at the Monterey Marriott thanks to our Marriott Rewards and epically perfect weather were my reward as well as the lesson that sometimes “getting it done” is just as worthy as a PR.
It was strange to run a distance that I had run so many times before and to feel like my body literally wanted to stop. I walked when I could not run, but mostly I just kept going. The photos from the day are glorious. They still make me smile – now if only I could find the rest of them in the mess that is our iPhoto these days.
If you haven’t noticed from previous posts, I have a pace person right at home – my husband! So on Monday after that race, I asked if he would run with me once a week and he said yes!
Hmmm, I guess I better see if he will still do this 2 years later….He’s already been helping my training with the perfect distances around our neighborhood.
Love that in my draft post, I wrote “Today was our first weekly training run, well for him it is his easy run, but for me it is my pace run.” Guess, it’s all about a little perspective.
