It’s pretty clear that I am a huge Marriott fan, but what may not be as clear is why.
13 years ago, my Dad got sick with stage IV lung cancer given 3 to 8 mos to live. It was early in a lot of new pieces of my life: relationship, jobs, mortgage, etc.
What I found in that moment was the need for a quiet space to regroup after dealing with the emotional factor of facing the imminent mortality of my Dad, who I expected to live a heck of a lot longer.
One of our jobs had an office near Carmel Valley, their preferred hotel was the Marriott Del Mar. It is at the top of my mind as my second two nights of this California adventure have been spent at the relatively new Residence Inn by Marriott just next door.
Quite honestly, I lost count of the number of night we spent at the Marriott Del Mar. Let’s just say they knew me well enough to know when I was having a bad day.
The bartender/server knew my order fairly well – lemon drop, sushi, and French fries. He also knew that the food may or may not all be eaten.
It was a little sanctuary for me in the midst of a decidedly challenging time.
The level of service combined with the perks of being loyal to a brand had me sold and I have been loyal to the Marriott brand ever since. Kindness begets kindness and also loyalty begets loyalty.
It was a welcome addition when we could start using points wit’s the Ritz-Carlton and of course now earn them there too.
Hitting the road back to Phoenix shortly, so more on this California adventure tomorrow….time to enjoy the drive.
