Recently, a friend who knows me well asked, “where will you go for your birthday?” It was not what will you do or how you will celebrate, but where will you go. Traveling fills up my soul in ways that other things do not. From the time I was 18, I have saved to travel, it is where my spare change will always go.
19 in Paris, 20 in Hong Kong, 21 was in SF as I would graduate 2 months later, 22 celebrated early in the Galapagos…By then I had met my husband and we would marry a few months before my 24th birthday. The birthday adventures became more sporadic, but he adopted my travel bug and we made a commitment to travel for our anniversary. I still managed to celebrate 28 a little late on an India adventure, 30 in Paris and London (we split the day between the two),
Yesterday, I went thru photos to try to fill up a few frames with photos of friends, family and me as it seems strange to have photos of us on the wall. Going thru photos had me a little nostalgic for all of the travels that we shared together. I am missing photos from our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd anniversaries on my computer, but I am fairly certain that those trips were cruises in the Caribbean.
4th – Miami and Cruise
5th – Decadent dinner at Ritz in SF as we were going to India a few months later
6th – Costa Rica
7th – Disneyland, La Jolla and Palm Desert (Gma’s 90th bday)
8th – Cruise thru Caribbean
9th – Mediterranean cruise – Malaga, Valencia, Rome, Florence, Corsica
10th – Paris, Juan Les Pins, Cannes, Istanbul
11th – Disneyland and Laguna Niguel
12th – Staycation at Camelback Inn
13th – Laguna Niguel (interesting that this is the only year that there is not a photo of me solo on the trip…)
A month from now would have been our 14th anniversary, which means right now we would have either been plotting a trip or eagerly anticipating a trip that we already planned.
Since my passport is with the Department of State for the name change, I have a serious case of wanderlust and I am definitely considering/plotting where I will head next. I am thinking it will probably be Spain or France as it has been 3 years since I have been to Europe, but I may try some place new.
All I know is that my next birthday will be celebrated afar.
