Earlier this year, I was in between projects at work. As I tried to balance having less on my to do list than I was used to, I turned to volunteering.
With my boss’ blessing, I started volunteering once a week during drop in hours at Second Harvest Food Bank. I liked the flexibility of drop in hours, because it was not a big deal if I couldn’t make it one week.
Last month as I faced being laid off, I again turned to volunteering. It provided me with a routine and a sense of perspective. Yes, I am now unemployed, however I have so much for which I can be grateful: loving husband, supportive family, warm and safe home, and the ability to cook delicious food for us.
